Today, we are excited to introduce you to a key member of our project management team, John Hicks! As a Senior Project Manager, John is responsible for overseeing multidisciplinary projects, ensuring they stay on schedule, within budget, and achieve the desired outcomes.
Currently, John is working on a project for a client in the pharmaceutical industry, focused on increasing production capacity by installing a new filling line.
We recently sat down with John to learn more about his career journey and gather his advice for aspiring professionals in the field.
How did you begin your career in Project Management?
I started as an engineering apprentice at Unilever. After progressing through various on-site roles, I transitioned into a project development role within the company, and my career in project management grew from there.
What are your main responsibilities at Concept Projects Group?
My role involves assisting clients in delivering their projects. This can be through providing a turnkey solution or offering support to help them achieve their project goals.
What did your most recent project at Concept Projects Group involve?
I’m currently working on a pharmaceutical site, helping them expand their production capabilities. I’m also involved in a separate project that will enable them to offer an additional product development solution to both existing and new customers.
What aspect of your role is the most rewarding?
Turning an idea into reality gives me a deep sense of satisfaction, especially when I see it come to life and hand it over to the client.
What keeps you motivated?
I’ve always loved engineering. I enjoy learning about new technologies, processes, and equipment. Each project presents its own unique challenges, and there’s nothing like solving a problem to give you a real buzz.
What would you advise people looking to start out in a role like yours?
Look for a development role that allows you to gradually build your skill set. It can be challenging at first to juggle everything while learning about project management.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy football, both watching and coaching an U14s team. I also love the hustle and bustle of a busy household—there’s always something going on, and it’s incredibly rewarding.
What are you most looking forward to about the future?
Gaining experience in different industries and on various sites. It ties back to my love of engineering and thirst for knowledge.

The team first and foremost. Andy and Steve (Co-Managing Directors) have created an environment that is a pleasure to work in, and I’m surrounded by a great group of people.
