Today, we are excited to introduce you to a key member of our project management team, John Storm! As a Senior Project Manager, John is responsible for overseeing multidisciplinary projects, ensuring they stay on schedule, within budget, and achieve the desired outcomes.
Currently, John is working on a project for a client in the pharmaceutical industry, focused on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency—two areas where he’s making a real impact!
We recently sat down with John to learn more about his career journey and gather his advice for aspiring professionals in the field.
How did you begin your career in Project Management?
I started as a contractor on the Cat Cracker and CDU4 projects at Stanlow Oil Refinery in the late 1980s. Since then, I’ve always been involved in projects in some capacity. I really cut my teeth in engineering projects at Nice-Pak International during the 1990s. Looking back, I owe that company a great deal for what I learned there.
What are your main responsibilities at Concept Projects Group?
As a Senior Project Manager, I work closely with Concept Projects Group’s clients. My role involves guiding their projects through all stages—from conceptualisation and feasibility to capital appropriation, implementation, and handover. We handle all project aspects, often using the client’s systems to create and approve project plans, quality and safety risk assessments, change controls, and more.
What did your most recent project at Concept Projects Group involve?
Currently, I’m embedded with a pharmaceutical manufacturer in North Wales. My projects focus on natural resource preservation, aiming for Net Zero, energy reduction, emissions reduction, clean energy use, and environmental risk mitigation. In simple terms, I’m figuring out how to make steam without cooking the planet.
What aspect of your role is the most rewarding?
I feel fortunate to use my diverse skills and knowledge in a role with such a wide-ranging project portfolio. Working with Concept Projects Group and their clients is enthralling. Since I joined, there hasn’t been a single dull day!
What keeps you motivated?
My motivation comes from wanting to reward the trust the Concept Projects Group team places in me. Additionally, I know that a happy client is our ultimate reward. Working in a field where I can fully express my skills is another huge motivator.
What would you advise people looking to start out in a role like yours?
Teach yourself how to learn. Remember, things often seem more complex from a distance. If you feel out of your depth, dive a little deeper. Trust me; soon, you’ll be skipping above the waves. And, go for it—working on projects will keep you sane.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy reading, walking, browsing YouTube, cooking, and eating. I also love debating life and the universe with my wife and happily coming in second every time.
What are you most looking forward to about the future?
On a personal level, both my sons are in their 30s and have left home but neither have children of their own. Me, I’m easy about that and my wife pretends to be so too, but I can’t wait to see the look on her face if and when a grandchild comes along. Professionally, I always look forward to the handshake at the end of a completed project and the excitement of what the next project will bring.
