As a leading engineering project delivery company based in Wirral, North West, we place the environment at the heart of everything we do. In line with our ESG strategy roadmap, we committed to calculating and verifying our carbon emissions. We are thrilled to announce that we have not only achieved but surpassed our initial targets, accomplishing this milestone three months ahead of schedule.
So, how did we become a carbon-neutral company?
Our initial carbon footprint was established using the gold standard of ISO 14064 and GHG Emissions Protocol Standards, measuring our scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This encompassed everything from our office footprint and energy usage to company-leased cars, business travel, and remote working patterns.
The data revealed that business travel was our major contributor to carbon emissions, prompting us to implement a comprehensive carbon reduction plan. Leveraging science-based targets, we’re committed to reducing our emissions by an impressive 50% by 2030. This plan not only aligns with our company vision of becoming a leading disruptor who has changed the environmental landscape for the manufacturing sector, but also aligns with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Employee engagement was instrumental in this process. Through questionnaires detailing their travel habits and work patterns, our team played a vital role in shaping our carbon neutrality strategy. Furthermore, via the Carbon Neutral Britain Climate Fund™, we effectively offset our entire carbon emissions through internationally certified carbon offsetting projects.
These projects are certified via the Verra – Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the Gold Standard – Voluntary Emission Reductions (VER), or the United Nations – Certified Emission Reductions (CER) programmes. What sets these projects apart is not only their impact in offsetting emissions but also their broader positive effects worldwide. They contribute to education, employment, and clean water initiatives, while also fostering a net positive impact on local wildlife and ecology.
Of course, every journey comes with its challenges. For us, the shared office space posed an initial hurdle in gathering specific data. However, by working closely with our facilities management team, we successfully allocated our usage within the facility’s waste and energy streams.
What are our next steps in maintaining and furthering our commitment to carbon neutrality?
Looking ahead, our commitment to carbon neutrality remains steadfast. We’re exploring innovative ways to achieve our ambitious targets, including promoting video conferencing and car sharing to reduce business travel. Additionally, we encourage our clients to join us in our sustainability efforts by contributing to our ‘Optional Carbon Offset Contribution‘ initiative, in partnership with Make It Wild. This initiative allows clients to contribute an additional 1% of the overall quote value towards global reforestation efforts.
