At Concept Projects Group, we were tasked with creating a robust, evidence-based portfolio of costed options to significantly reduce the annual CO2 emissions from our client’s plant steam generation systems. We were also entrusted with managing the implementation of the solutions selected by the client. Our mission was clear: prioritise environmental health and sustainability without being constrained by traditional financial cost-benefit frameworks.
The client’s site operates six steam boilers with a total capacity of 12,700 kg of steam at 8 bar per hour. These boilers are distributed across three independent suites, each serving distinct demand streams. Currently, the boilers consume 9.4 million kWh of natural gas annually, at a cost of £996,844 (2024 prices), and emit 1,767.9 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere—representing 63% of the site’s total carbon footprint.
To develop actionable and impactful solutions, we conducted a detailed analysis of 2.5 million data points on steam flow and gas consumption over three months. Alongside this, we immersed ourselves in understanding the client’s current, industry-leading, and historically efficient steam generation systems. This comprehensive approach enabled us to deliver tailored, sustainable strategies designed to drive meaningful change.
From the FEED study the following options were identified:
Beginning January 2025, the implemented solutions will deliver an annual reduction of 530 tonnes in CO2 emissions, alongside cost savings of £300,000 per year.
